Start from the application and go straight to the first-choice material — 14 applications in four groups: power conversion, power inductors, signal & low frequency, and EMI suppression.

First-choice materials by application

The first-choice materials follow TAK's material selection rules.

Inductors are chosen by IDC, transformers by frequency band and temperature; see the table below.

Bands in brackets are recommended.The first choice is not the only one; for alternates and NiZn counterparts see the circuit pages and material pages.★ = 2027 new material.Optimal operating temperature range of transformer grades (℃): TP40 60–100, TP44 80–100, TP45 60–80, TM80 25–100, TM81 25–120, TM83★ 25–140, TM50A 65–100, TM59★ 25–100, TM61 40–80, TM63 40–80, TM65★ 40–80.

Power materials compared: fixed flux, temperature and loss threshold

At the same flux (50 mT) and temperature (100 °C), the grades are compared by the frequency at which their loss reaches 300 kW/m³: the further right, the better suited to high frequency; the vertical axis is saturation flux density Bs — the higher, the less prone to saturation.

On the right, the high-frequency group — TM63, TM65★, TM61, TM59★; top left, the high-Bs group — TM82, TM71; TM80, TM81 and TM83★ stand for wide temperature. Choosing a material means finding the balance between high frequency and resistance to saturation.

FIG · POWER-FERRITE MAP ⤢FIG · POWER-FERRITE MAP
How to read
Further right = higher usable frequency at the same loss threshold; higher up = larger DC-bias margin; a longer line = larger Bs derating with temperature. High-frequency DC-DC (VRM / TLVR) requires a high threshold frequency and sufficient Bs at the 100 °C end; PFC and main transformers prioritise Bs and low-frequency loss.
The six classes
From left to right the six classes follow their bands: low-frequency high-Bs (≈0.1 MHz) → standard band (three TP and three wide-temperature grades, threshold 0.5–1 MHz) → mid-frequency TM50A / TM59★ → MHz band TM61 / TM65★ → ultra-high-frequency TM63 (2 MHz); the high-Bs special grades TM71 / TM82 excel in Bs, not threshold frequency. ★ = recommended in the VRM / TLVR selection guide.
No extrapolation
Grades marked “≥” have a threshold beyond the fitted range of their loss model; the map clips at the fit limit instead of extrapolating, so the real capability may be higher. Dashed lines have no 50 mT loss data and are placed by class band; their capability is assessed by the IDC comparison.

Label figures = loss-threshold frequency (MHz).The chart is a relative comparison at the same flux and threshold, not an application frequency limit — at operating flux below 50 mT the usable frequency is higher."≥" = the calculated threshold lies beyond the fitted range of that grade's loss model; the chart does not extrapolate, and the actual value may be higher."≈" = no 50 mT loss data; positioned by the band in the material table, with its capability compared by IDC.TM71's 0.39 is interpolated from two measured points at 300 and 500 kHz @50 mT.Only grades relevant to server power are shown.Bs at 1200 A/m; ★ = 2027 new material.

2027 new materials: specifications

Four new materials, each answering an application gap: TM59★, a low-loss power grade made for 500 kHz–1 MHz; TM65★ for 1 MHz-class VRM/TLVR inductors; TM83★, which keeps its low loss at a core temperature of 140 ℃; and ME03★, which brings MnZn into EMI suppression at 30–1000 MHz.

Typical values measured on toroidal cores; actual values vary with shape and size.Although ME03 belongs to the MnZn system, the catalogue also lists it in the EMI materials chapter of the NiZn volume.

NiZn material grade cross-reference

The 27 NiZn grades are arranged by TAK initial permeability μi from low to high in four groups: high-frequency stable (low μi, high Q), high-flux solder-resistant, EMI suppression / low temperature coefficient, and general-purpose NiMgZn / MgZn.

Figures in brackets are each maker's nominal μi; take particular care where they differ widely from TAK's values.
